What is a Readability Score?
A readability score is a numerical estimate of how easy or difficult a piece of text is to read. The most widely used formula, Flesch Reading Ease, measures the average sentence length and average syllables per word to produce a score from 0 to 100. Higher scores mean simpler, more accessible writing.
Readability has a direct impact on content performance. Studies consistently show that simpler writing earns longer dwell times, more shares, and better conversion rates. While Google has not confirmed readability as a direct ranking factor, pages that are easy to read tend to accumulate the engagement signals that do influence rankings.
Shorten your sentences
Aim for an average of 15-20 words per sentence. Break long sentences into two shorter ones. Rhythm matters, so mix lengths, but keep the average readable.
Prefer short words
Choose simple alternatives where possible. 'Use' beats 'utilize'. 'Help' beats 'facilitate'. Shorter words reduce syllable count and lift your Flesch score.
Use active voice
Active voice reads faster and feels more direct. 'The team shipped the update' is clearer than 'The update was shipped by the team'.
Break up paragraphs
Dense walls of text discourage reading. Keep paragraphs to 2-4 sentences on the web, and use subheadings to create scannable structure.
