How to Turn Keyword Ideas into Traffic

A raw keyword list is worthless on its own - the signal comes from filtering. After generating ideas, sort by search volume to see the biggest markets, then filter out terms where the competition index is high but your domain authority is low. The sweet spot for most sites is the middle: 500-5,000 searches per month, medium competition, and a clear commercial or informational intent that matches your page type.

CPC is an overlooked signal. Any keyword with CPC above $3 means advertisers believe it converts - that is commercial intent in hard numbers. Even if you never plan to run Google Ads, those keywords are the ones most likely to produce leads and sales from organic traffic. Cross-reference high-volume terms against high-CPC terms and you have a prioritized list for the next quarter of content.

Group by intent

Split your list into informational ('how to', 'what is'), commercial ('best', 'vs', 'review'), and transactional ('buy', 'pricing'). Each intent needs a different page type.

Target the middle

For a new or mid-sized site, the 500-5,000 volume range with medium competition is where rankings move fastest. Ignore head terms until you have authority.

Mine long-tail

Keywords with 4+ words often have less than 100 volume each but convert 3-5x better than head terms. Build one page per cluster of 3-5 long-tails.

Re-run quarterly

Search volumes drift as trends change. Re-run your seed list every 3 months to catch emerging queries and drop dying ones.
